Chief Constables' Message
We really welcome your interest in joining our Police Force. It is a privilege to lead the teams in Surrey Police and Sussex Police who continuously work selflessly and tirelessly in order to keep people in our counties safe.
We are looking for talented and inspirational people who put the needs of the public at the heart of everything that they do and who want to make a difference. If you feel you are that person then we want to hear from you.
We wish you all the very best with your application.

The Role and Key Responsibilities
As an ARV Sergeant and accredited Operational Firearms Commander, you will work a 6 on (2 early, 2 late, 2 night), 4 off shift pattern and be responsible for delivering a response to spontaneous firearms incidents within the airport footprint and across the wider Operations Command of Surrey and Sussex. On occasion, this will include supporting other departments in the targeting and apprehension of dangerous and prolific offenders via planned activity.
In addition, there will be the opportunity to lead high profile, armed patrols within the terminal buildings and road network at Gatwick, prioritising the safety of over 40 million members of the travelling public a year, and making the airport a hostile environment for terrorist and criminal activity.
Benefits will include an annual £2000 Southeast allowance, payable monthly and a firearms retention payment of £2000 (£500 per quarter) payable after a year in post.
Deliver first line supervision to a mixed team of ARV role profile and unarmed constables. Setting the highest of standards, you will have experience in delivering a first-class service to the public and colleagues alike; enjoy supporting your team members and be instrumental in their development, inspiring those around you to be the best they can.
The tactics you deliver in response to a spontaneous or planned firearms incident will be commensurate with the ARV role profile, in accordance with Authorised Professional Practice, Armed Policing.
Operationally command the delivery of high profile, armed patrols of Gatwick Airport, Burpham and Lewes in response to the current threat to a key part of the UK's Critical National Infrastructure.
Skills & Experience
We are looking for highly motivated, professional individuals who want to deliver on our force priorities: protect our communities, catch criminals, and deliver an outstanding service to both the public and our colleagues with whom we work daily.
• Essential Skills to include: attained the rank of substantive Police Sergeant, ARV Role profile holder or have been within the last 3 years (from closure), Operational Firearms Commander and an Advanced Driver.
• Desirable Skills to include: Firearms Tactical Advisor operational accreditation, National Firearms Instructor, Drone Operator, Discrete ARV (plain clothes) trained.
You will need to successfully complete the force vetting process to SC status which may take some time to complete; please bear this in mind when applying.
Depending on currency of your ARV role profile and Operational Firearms Commander status if lapsed within the last 12 months, you may also need to complete a gap analysis of missed mandated refresher training. This will be managed by our Chief Firearms Instructor and our Firearms Training Manager. This may be conducted piecemeal or, as part of a block of training depending on the gap.
Diversity Statement
We are only as good as our people. It's really important that our officers and staff can be themselves in the workplace and we know that as an organisation we'll grow from the variety of thinking, approach and skills that diversity brings; all of which help us to deliver a better policing service. We strive to ensure how we deliver our services, provide information and how we recruit is open and accessible to all.
We have multiple staff support groups who help to improve our understanding of minority issues and ensure they are reflected in our work. We are proud members of the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index and Disability Confident, a signatory of the Race at Work Charter and aligned with the Armed Forces Covenant and the HeForShe movement.
We value the differences that people bring from all backgrounds and communities. Regardless of age, sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, disability, social status or religious belief, we would love to hear from you.
