This role can be based at either the BGS headquarters in Keyworth in Nottingham or at our offices in Edinburgh, which are situated on the Heriot-Watt University campus An exciting opportunity has arisen in BGS for a highly motivated and enthusiastic Research & Commercial Development Officer to join the BGS Business Development (BD) Team. The role of the BD Team is to help identify and access funding, and to build relationships with our stakeholders and clients. The role includes negotiation of commercial projects, research projects, partnerships, and co-developed proposals; and building networks and key client relationships. The key duties / responsibilities of the role include (for example, but not limited to): To stimulate and develop external income for BGS by growing networks, and meeting collaborators and potential users for several different sectors. To undertake market research activities to define future demand for BGS research services and facilities. In collaboration with BD colleagues, implement a dynamic business development plan for geology in support of the energy and decarbonisation challenges including geothermal Research and research facilities and observatories (e.g. UK GeoEnergy Observatory). To analyse trends and future markets relevant to BGS services and facilities and identify promotion opportunities, with the aim of attracting users to BGS and to our new subsurface facilities. To identify funding opportunities from a range of sources (UKRI Research and innovation funding, commercial funding, and novel innovation sources such as OFGEM and European funds) To work closely with relevant BGS BD Manager for Decarbonisation and Resource Management and the Head of Geothermal and UK Geoenergy Observatory Science Leads and other DRM science leads to develop income in line with BGS objectives, understanding the market for these areas and promoting relevant services. To link with organisations that provide platforms for networking to maximise business development and innovation connections – including undertaking presentations to increase the profile of BGS decarbonisation research. To support BGS scientists with bid applications ensuring a corporate approach and that bids for business are coordinated, including use of online tender, and bid management systems. Candidates should be educated to Degree level in a Business, Marketing or Science subject and have be able to demonstrate experience working in a customer focussed business development environment, preferably within a research or science environment. An important part of this role is building and maintaining excellent relationships with customers and promoting our services to new clients in existing and new markets. We are therefore looking for someone who has great communication and presentation skills, with the ability to develop external links and represent BGS professionally. You will also have experience of developing commercial and grant funding proposals, delivering business plans and marketing strategies.
