Each role at OCC is different and we know the needs of individuals are also varied, and so our approach to where and how often we would like to see you in person will be taken depending on the requirements of the role and in collaboration with you as part of the recruitment process.
Hours per week: 37 - we are open to discussions about flexible working

Contract type: 2 x Permanent positions

Closing date: Monday 13th May 2024

Interview date: w/c Monday 20th May 2024

Do you want to be a part of our team, improving the highway network, and helping us to make Oxfordshire an even better, safer, place to live, work and visit?

About us

It is an exciting time to join Oxfordshire County Council’s Highways & Operations team.

We are determined to deliver a high quality, safe, sustainable, and reliable network. The service structure has recently been re-imagined, ensuring we are best positioned to meet the high expectations of our customers, and evolving challenges such as climate adaptation.

Oxfordshire County Council is looking for two Senior Officers (Engineers) to work within the Traffic & Road Safety Team.

We are responsible across the County for:

Road casualty reduction through identification, development, design, and delivery of the annual Traffic & Road Safety Programme including, but not limited to:

-    Active and sustainable travel improvements.
-    Traffic Management / Safety & Accessibility improvements.
-    Speed management initiatives.

Renewal of traffic sign and Road marking infrastructure by identifying and developing maintenance and improvement needs.

Investigating customer enquiries and complaints relating to all aspects of Traffic and Road Safety.

About the role

The post holder will support the Team Leader in the delivery of a high-quality traffic & Road Safety and maintenance service across the County.

We are looking for a knowledgeable and enthusiastic professional with proven experience of the technical elements and legislation around the implementation of a variety of Traffic and highway related schemes such as traffic calming, bus stops, pedestrian crossings, speed limit changes, junction improvements, and traffic signs and Road markings. You will be responsible for the design and project management of the schemes from inception to completion and will have a high attention to detail.

There will also be an expectation for you to take on general traffic management duties such as the maintenance of traffic signs and Road markings on the highway network and the investigation of enquires and complaints.

About you

You will be adept at positively representing the County Council, whether that be in person, or through written correspondence. As well as dealing with members of the public the role has contact with all levels of the political structure, from County Councillors to Parish Councils where you will need to be diplomatic and politically aware and be sympathetic to their requests.

You will be self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision whilst working as part of a multi-disciplinary team responsible for the highway network.

You will need to be willing to learn new skills and be a team player that contributes to building a positive and engaged working environment.

The designated work location will be in County Hall, Oxford, although much of the work is anticipated to be able to be carried out whilst agile working, (i.e. other offices in Oxfordshire or from home). You will be regularly required to carry out site visits to inspect the highway or provide client supervision of construction works.

Rewards and benefits

  • Culture of flexible working
  • Technology to support agile working where role permits
  • Up to 33 days holiday p.a. plus bank holidays
  • Option to ‘buy’ additional holiday
