Job description

Leeds Cancer Centre is a large tertiary referral centre within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. Services are provided to patients from Leeds and the wider Yorkshire Cancer Network, which incorporates Airedale, Bradford, Dewsbury, Halifax, Huddersfield, Wakefield, York and their surrounding areas. Care is delivered in close collaboration with The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust palliative care team and local hospices, as well as with a range of medical disciplines, including surgical oncology, clinical psychology and those tied to general internal medicine. In addition to offering world-class cancer care, Leeds Cancer Centre is exceptionally research-active.
Patients are recruited to a wide range of local, national and international clinical trials, and the Centre collaborates closely to deliver a number of laboratory-based and translational studies. Our partner institution, the University of Leeds, boasts a large cancer research portfolio and is a Cancer Research UK Trials Centre. Duties of the Post Your duties and responsibilities on this placement will include: The management of patients with cancer and haematological pathologies who are inpatient in the centre or presenting to the acute oncology assessment area; as directed and supported by nursing and allied staff, registrars and consultants. The management of patients with cancer and haematological pathologies presenting to the outpatient department, as required or where possible as a learning opportunity.
Formulation of treatment plans in association with members of oncology multidisciplinary teams The management of acute toxicities following systemic anti-cancer therapies such as cytotoxic chemotherapy and immunotherapy. The management of acute toxicities following radiotherapy. The management of acute complications of anti-cancer therapies, including hypersensitivity reactions to systemic anti-cancer therapies. The management of oncological emergencies and complications of cancer.
The management of general medical pathologies in patients with cancer and who are receiving anti-cancer therapy. The management of patients within clinical trials. Palliation of symptoms and care of patients in the last stages of life. Communication with patients with cancer and their relatives.
Completion of audit and research projects. Given the duration of the post, a broader or larger project is encouraged, and time is allocated to achieve this. Previous post-holders have achieved both National and International conference submissions and publications. Participation in the on-call rota is expected if required, but not guaranteed.
Levels of Responsibility These posts are available to doctors who have completed their Foundation Programme Training and who are keen to expand their experience of General Internal Medicine, Haematology and Oncology. Each Trust Grade Doctor will follow a weekly timetable consisting of ward work covering inpatient wards and the oncology/haematology admissions unit, on-call duties. Post holders will care for patients with a wide range of pathologies, including those relating to non-malignant and malignant haematology, acute oncology and palliative care, as well as those patients receiving anti-cancer treatment but who present with a wide range of medical pathologies. Doctors in these posts will additionally be encouraged to attend specialist multi-disciplinary cancer meetings, Friday morning departmental education meetings, outpatient clinics and radiotherapy planning and review sessions.
A full induction programme will be provided and each Trust Grade will be supported by a dedicated Consultant who will act as their Clinical Supervisor. Teaching and Training Opportunities Trust Grade Doctor in Oncology/Haematology will be encouraged to attend teaching sessions provided by the department for junior medical staff. Additional teaching will be provided during normal ward duties, attendance at multidisciplinary team meetings, and through involvement in radiotherapy planning and review sessions. Trust Grade Doctors will also have the opportunity to gain experience in outpatient clinics.
