LEEDS TEACHING HOSPITAL NHS TRUST JOB DESCRIPTION JOB DETAILS Job Title: Trust Doctor in Paediatric Surgery Specialty/Department: Paediatric Surgery ST1/2 Location: Leeds General Infirmary. INFORMATION ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT Fellow in Paediatric Surgery is based at the Leeds General Infirmary in West Yorkshire. This role is suitable for applicants at ST1/2 LST with experience in Paediatric Surgery. It is ideally suited to candidates wishing to work in a large teaching hospital which provides many specialist services and is ideal for anyone wishing to pursue a career in Paediatric Surgery The department provides exposure to all surgical aspects of children ranging from 0 16 years.
This includes general surgery of childhood to highly specialised skills in fields of Thoracic Surgery, Upper GI Surgery, Lower GI Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery, Oncology Surgery, Neonatal Surgery and Urology. There are 2/3 consultants per specialty providing elective specialty work and all consultants participate in acute oncalls to provide general surgery for children and trauma service. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED The post holder should have experience of general Paediatric Surgery DUTIES OF THE POST The Trust Doctor will support in a rolling 10 week shift rota and be involved in covering all aspects of inpatient care including long day ward cover and night shifts.
As a lower specialty trainee, this post will be covered by a higher surgical trainee.During the other weeks you will be involved in other aspects of the paediatric surgical service, including attending outpatient clinics, theatres and performing audits and will also have exposure to other activities within the department. LEVELS OF RESPONSIBILITY The post holder will support the on call rota equivalent to ST1/2. The post holder will be rotated to cover the paediatric surgical ward on 42, surgical newborn unit, outliers, A&E and CAT units and theatres or clinics. This gives all trainees an opportunity to see the breadth of patients in Paediatric Surgery and manage them both in an elective setting and a sick child.
There are several theatre lists both emergency and elective lists that happen on a daily basis and several clinics that happen daily. Trainees are encouraged to go to any of these as per their choice and availability. All trainees are allocated a clinical supervisor within the department and if they do not have an educational supervisor in their rotation are allocated one within the department as well. All trainees should attend the daily morning handover at 8:00- 8:30am and join the ward round if they are not going to either theatre or clinic.

These documents are available on the Medical Staffing Intranet site. The post holder is required to be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and hold a licence to practice. Standards of Conduct and Behaviour You are required to work to the standards set out by the General Medical Council in Good Medical Practice.This includes protecting patients when you believe that a doctors or other colleagues conduct, performance or health is a threat to them.If, after establishing the facts, it is necessary, you must follow the Trusts procedures in this matter and inform your Clinical Director or Medical Director in the first instance.
Your general conduct at work should comply with the standards set out in the Trusts document on Appraisal, in particular the section on Core Behaviours. Leave Arrangements All leave should be applied for in accordance with the Trusts Leave Policy, normally giving six weeks notice of any leave, other than in exceptional circumstances. Training During the course of your employment, you agree to undergo whatever training the Trust deems necessary.This may include, but is not limited to, induction training, professional development and safe working practices.Funding of such training will be in accordance with the Trusts Staff Development Policy.
