Job description

Tintagel Castle is one of the most popular historic attractions in Cornwall, and we want all our visitors to have a great experience. With this in mind, we are launching an exciting volunteer programme to help support the continued growth of Tintagel Castle and to ensure everybody has a great day out.

As a Visitor Volunteer you will support the site team to provide a great day out to the wide array of visitors that Tintagel welcomes every day. Tintagel is a complex site, and you will play in important role in helping visitors to navigate it by:

  • Being an ambassador for English Heritage, offering a warm welcome, and having a variety of conversations with visitors from across the world 
  • Delivering key messages and notices regarding the site to visitors, making yourself available to help with visitor needs
  • Informing visitors of the facilities available at the site, directing visitors to key points
  • Giving insights into the site and snippets of interesting information
  • There will also be an opportunity to spend some time on the historic monument, giving small talks or engaging with visitors about the history of this amazing site.

This is a flexible role, with volunteer sessions available at different times through the year. Your commitment may change with the seasons, but we hope you might be able to give:

  • A session a week from March to October
  • A session every other week throughout the winter period, November to February

This role would suit someone who is friendly and committed, and who would enjoy working in our welcoming team. Because Tintagel is an internationally recognised historic attraction, we are looking for volunteers who are able to engage with all people of all ages and from different cultures and backgrounds. Please note; volunteers in this role will have to stand for long periods/walk the site and will have to spend time outside.

To help prepare you for this role, we will provide full training and ongoing support, you will be supported in;

  • Developing an understanding of the history of the castle, collection and local area
  • Familiarisation with site and staff
  • Customer service training
  • 2-way radio training
  • Health and safety training

We kindly ask all of our volunteers;

  • To be the friendly face of English Heritage and deliver excellent customer service
  • To be reliable in attendance and dependable
  • Help us maintain the highest standards of presentation at our sites and properties
  • To wear English Heritage volunteer uniform where provided
  • Help us protect our properties and collections by understanding and following our security and safety procedures
  • Maintain good working relationships with staff, other volunteers and members of the public
  • Attend appropriate training and learn about the work of English Heritage
  • Observe organisational policy and procedures 
  • Safeguard confidential information about English Heritage and let us know about anything relating to your role or the work of English Heritage that you think might be controversial
  • Any documentary or other material (including any copyright applying thereto) you are provided with or created by you in respect of your volunteering will be the property and copyright of English Heritage (unless otherwise agreed in writing).

As an English Heritage volunteer, you can expect;

  • Recognition and appreciation for your contribution
  • A full induction and training programme with on-going support
  • Reimbursement of reasonable local travel costs between home and volunteering location within agreed limits
  • A certificate to demonstrate work carried out for English Heritage is available on request to show future employers or further education providers
  • You will be covered by English Heritage’s own indemnity arrangements in respect of all liabilities that may result from your appointment as a volunteer.
