Director of Networks & Innovation
Applications are invited for the role of Director of Networks & Innovation for SONI (System Operator for Northern Ireland). The role reports to the SONI Chief Executive.
As the System Operator for Northern Ireland, SONI Ltd, plays a critical role through planning the development and the safe operation of the electricity transmission grid in Northern Ireland. The transmission grid brings power from where it is generated to where it is needed, supplying large industrial customers and the distribution networks, which in turn supply homes, farms and businesses across the island.
As part of the EirGrid Group, SONI is at the forefront of innovation in the energy industry, enabling the transition towards a low-carbon, technology-enabled smart future. The Group also operates the wholesale Single Electricity Market (SEM) and the East West Interconnector, a high voltage link between Ireland and Great Britain.
SONI is regulated by the Utility Regulator (UR) in Northern Ireland. Based on a recent licence change requiring board, managerial and resource separation from the parent company, SONI has initiated a significant transformational programme of work to implement its future organisational structure and operating model, whilst it continues to support the implementation of the Northern Ireland Energy Strategy and Climate Action Plan.
The role of Director of Networks & Innovation is a newly created role within SONI’s Executive Leadership Team structure and will lead the Networks & Innovation Directorate which is central to achieving the future ambitions of SONI on multiple levels. Within this context, the Director of Networks & Innovation will ensure that SONI is future focused, developing and growing its position and providing thought leadership.
The Director of Networks & Innovation will build, lead and oversee the successful delivery of all areas of Networks & Innovation including Networks (including Future Networks); Digital & Innovation, Future Markets, Future Operations and Major Projects PMO. The teams within this Directorate will develop scenarios, options, and optimum pathways to ensure that demand for electricity is met and security of supply is maintained in NI.
This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced senior manager with a track record of reporting to Executive or Board level in a complex energy or other utility environment. Given the forward focus of this role it is also essential that you have experience of effectively influencing strategy development and have the ability to bring a variety of stakeholders on a change journey with you. It is also beneficial to have experience in the oversight of IT divisions.
