This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.
Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.
Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowances and hours.

The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role & Key Responsibilities
Are you looking to continue to develop your career within Health & Safety with the facilities sector? Do you want to make a positive contribution to those who directly support the local community? If so, we have a role that could enable you to fulfil your aspirations.
Responsible for monitoring the built environment compliance within the police owned estate, ensuring that the buildings remain compliant, safe and support the effective delivery of policing in Surrey and Sussex.
The Health & Safety Advisor is a key role within the department responsible for supporting FM delivery teams in all matters relating to health and safety in the built environment. You will be a subject matter expert and the main interface with the corporate Force Health & Safety Service and supporting the overall property health and safety compliance audit regime.
With your excellent interpersonal skills, you will help instil health and safety confidence in team members as they complete, update and review risk assessments whilst making sure that mitigation are appropriate and proportionate.
Resilient and self-motivated with excellent planning and organising skills, you will be required to effectively balance your scheduled workload whilst having an ability to adapt to changing priorities when required.

Excellent communication and personal interaction skills will be key to successfully engage with staff at the tactical level whilst being able to brief senior managers.

Skills & Experience
We are seeking individuals with the following skills, knowledge and experience:
  • NEBOSH General Certificate (Occupational Health or Construction) or equivalent qualification.
  • Extensive knowledge of H&S regulations and legislation, proactive approach towards anticipated changes in legislation (including Fire, Legionella, COSHH, Asbestos, Lone working and working at height).
  • Extensive, demonstrable experience of advising on H&S compliance in large scale/multi-site organisations ideally in an estates and facilities environment.
  • A strong communicator at all levels of the organisations with confident presentation skills.
  • Able to design, develop and implement clear strategies, policies, procedures and action plans gaining customer buy in.
  • Excellent planning and organising skills with the ability to work to deadlines and manage competing priorities.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to analyse, interpret and clearly articulate all health and safety matters and provide specialist advice and develop solutions.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with stakeholders.
  • This role will require you to travel across both Surrey Police & Sussex Police sites, therefore a driving licence is essential as well as having the means to travel, or willing to undergo our driving assessment to be able to use our pool cars.
