Job description

Division Head Position in CAYA ("Children, Adolescents and Young Adults") Cancer Survivorship Research at DKFZ (endowed by the Dietmar Hopp Foundation) (Ref-No. ) The German Cancer Research Center is the largest biomedical research institution in Germany. With more than 3,000 employees, we operate an extensive scientific program in the field of cancer research. We are seeking an internationally recognized scientist to advance the field of Cancer Survivorship Research, with a special focus on children and adolescents, as well as on adult patients who survived cancer treated at a young age. This exceptional opportunity is made possible by the generous support of the Dietmar Hopp Foundation. You will create a strong program bridging the gap between clinical practice and research; ultimately facilitating advances in survivorship care and long-term outcomes. To promote research in this underexplored domain, the DKFZ has designated this critical field of research as a high-priority area. We are currently developing a pioneering cluster in Survivorship Research, encompassing epidemiological registry research and translational research on the long-term effects of cancer treatment in both children and adults. The ideal candidate will lead an innovative research program covering different research areas such as identifying predictive markers for treatment sequelae, elucidating the pathogenic mechanisms underlying treatment-related side effects, investigating the long-term and late effects of cancer therapies, and exploring interventions and rehabilitation strategies. You will be responsible for the integration of the research program into the establishment of a Survivorship Outpatient Clinic with special consultation service for children, adolescents and young adults, as well as adult patients treated for cancer at young age. The Outpatient Clinic to be established in Heidelberg will develop a sustainable approach for long-term monitoring and patient care and serve as a contact point for survivors of cancer at young age in Germany. This effort is aimed to be connected to an AYA patient registry in Heidelberg to enable longitudinal follow-up and cross-sectional collaboration and research. The division will collaborate closely with the Hopp Children's Cancer Center (KiTZ), the National Cancer Prevention Center (NCPC), the DKFZ Hector Cancer Center at the University Medicine Mannheim, and Heidelberg University Hospital (e.g., Human Genetics, Medical Oncology, Neurooncology, Radiation Oncology, Surgical disciplines). Candidates with a background in human genetics are a perfect match for our existing portfolio of expertise, yet candidates with epidemiological training or a background in mechanistic research on late cancer treatment effects are also strongly encouraged to apply. Excellence in relevant research areas is required, and is evidenced by a significant record of high-impact publications and success in securing independent third-party research funding. Expertise in developing and implementing survivorship care plans and strategies, as well as international experience and a robust network in Cancer Survivorship Research are desired. Direct access to patients who survived cancer treatment at young age is provided through the KiTZ, the National Center for Tumor Diseases (NCT), Heidelberg University Hospital, the DKFZ Hector Institute and the NCPC, which is currently being established in a partnership between the DKFZ and the German Cancer Aid. Your division will be embedded in an outstanding research environment at the DKFZ covering broader cancer epidemiology and outcome, physical and psychological resilience, genomics, cancer related biomarkers, and data sciences. The DKFZ also provides the Cancer Information Service (KID) with national coverage and more than 10 million users per annum. You will also have access to the research networks of the DKFZ and the NCPC, such as the German Cancer Consortium (DKTK), the NCT, the network of Comprehensive Cancer Centers of the German Cancer Aid, and other research alliances at the national and international level. This tenured position at the level of a DKFZ Division Head (German W3 score equivalent) comes with attractive core funding for personnel, consumables and investments. In addition, access to competitive intramural funding programs of the DKFZ and the Helmholtz Association will be provided. Recruitment requirements include an MD and/or PhD in life sciences. Optimally, but not obligatory, the candidate has a German approbation as physician and a board certification in a relevant medical discipline such as human genetics or pediatric oncology. The applicant is expected to have high academic qualifications (habilitation or equivalent academic qualifications) with an international publication record, successful acquisition of third-party funding, evidence of effective and modern teaching and further education experience and a high level of academic commitment. A highly supportive research environment at the DKFZ, the National Cancer Prevention Center (NCPC) and the wider scientific community including Heidelberg University as well as opportunities for national and international networking at the highest level Campus with modern state-of-the-art infrastructure Compensation according to German W3 score equivalent 30 days of vacation per year Possibility of mobile work and part-time work Family-friendly working environment, e.g. parent-child room and advisory services Sustainable travel to work: subsidized Germany job ticket Administrative support for extramural grant application Our Corporate Health Management Program offers a holistic approach to your well-being
