About The Role

This is a Fixed Term role for 12 months, working 35 hours per week.

The Diabetes Research Group (DRG), part of the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science is active in areas of basic, clinical, epidemiological, social care and health services research. The Groups overarching aim is to address these important health-care needs by undertaking and supporting translational research to advance development and implementation of therapeutic strategies for prevention and treatment of diabetes.

Over a period of more than 25 years the DRG Laboratory have developed extensive experience in assays related to diabetes. This has included involvement in assay development, assay validation and use of these assays in a variety of clinical situations such as clinical trials. More recently the DRG Lab have become involved in the testing and validation of devices used in the diabetes area.

The overall function of the DRG Research Assistant will be to undertake research relating to the Innovate UK funded project grant ‘A portable diagnostic device that provides the accuracy of laboratory testing at the point of care’.

This project is focused on the development of a Point of Care (POC) test for use in the diagnosis and monitoring of type 1 diabetes (T1DM), a disease caused by the autoimmune destruction of the insulin-secreting cells of the pancreas.

The majority of the post holders time will be spent on work relating to this laboratory project, whilst also supporting other prestigious clinical trials in the diabetes field within the Good Clinical and Laboratory Practice accredited Diabetes Research Group lab.

The post holder will need to manage their own workload effectively, undertake project work as necessary and identify development opportunities. Some travel to meet the project industrial partner and attend project update meetings and conferences will be expected as part of the role.

Additional Information

The successful candidate will have a degree or equivalent experience in science, a knowledge of clinical trials and have previous experience of general laboratory techniques, ideally in the diabetes field and a proven ability of contributing towards writing and publishing peer-reviewed publications.
