We also have members in the private sector, for example in private training agencies and language schools, as well as members working on a freelance basis. Students training to teach in post-school education also belong to UCU.
Finance Assistant– The Role:
UCU is seeking a Finance Assistant to take part in the day-to-day operation of the Finance Section. In this exciting role, based in UCU’s Head Office in London NW1, and reporting to the Head of Finance, your main duties will be:
- Responsibility for a range of financial accounts and administrative functions
- Maintaining financial records in accordance with UCU statutory obligations
- Maintaining and monitoring purchase and sales ledger
- Closely monitoring UCU’s bank accounts, ensuring that accounts are not overdrawn
- Being one of the main contacts with UCU’s bankers and providing information as required
- Liaising with UCU members, both direct and via correspondence, regarding expenses
- Liaising with UCU’s external auditors
Finance Assistant– You:
The ideal candidate must be educated to GCSE level or equivalent (inc. maths & English) and would suit someone with experience of a similar working environment in a Finance Department and/or understanding of working for a Trade Union or other not-for-profit organisation. Other requirements include:
- A knowledge and understanding of financial and accounting procedures and principles, including double entry bookkeeping and computerised accounting systems
excellent numeracy skills and a good eye for detail
- An ability to deal with complex correspondence and financial matters, including regulations relating to the collection of union subscriptions
- An ability to work quickly and accurately with detailed financial information
- An in-depth knowledge and understanding of databases and spreadsheets
- An awareness of the importance of customer care in a membership-focused organisation
