Job description

Why this job matters
BT is now the flagship business brand of BT Group. The leading business communications provider in the UK, BT also supports customers internationally in 180 countries. It is trusted to connect and secure the operations of more than a million small businesses, medium and large enterprises and essential public services in the UK as well as of some of the world's best-known multinational companies and international organisations. BT's network, products and services underpin the operations of other UK communications providers, too.
The Business external comms team works across international markets and industry sectors, identifying stories and proof points that demonstrate progress towards our Group ambitions and commercial goals in our four customer-facing segments (Small & Medium Business; Corporate & Public Sector; Global; Wholesale).
As part of the team, you'll help shape and tell the story of BT's transformation from a telco to a tech company. You'll bring to life the milestones, outcomes and expertise that show why customers, partners, communities and the digital economy are better on BT - today and tomorrow.
You will lead on creating strategic traditional and social media profiling plans for the Business CEO and the senior leadership team. You'll also support in delivering impactful content and external communications campaigns in other key areas (for example BT brand-building programmes, and cross-segment themes like sustainability and cyber security).
More widely, this job will see you work collaboratively with the Business content marketing and industry analyst team, as well as the BT Group digital communications team.
What you'll be doing
  • You'll support external communications campaigns and content across Business, including strategy, delivery and evaluation.
  • Provide strategic external communications counsel to senior stakeholders, including members of the BLT, subject matter experts and SMT.
  • Develop profiling plans for the Business CEO and senior stakeholders - spanning traditional media opportunities, events and social media content.
  • Support senior leaders with appropriate briefings ahead of profiling opportunities, including message development.
  • Create compelling traditional and social media content - including press releases, longer-form content, spokesperson briefings, website copy, infographics, video and other digital media assets.
  • Oversee day-to-day management of social media channels, working closely with colleagues in external communications, content marketing and industry analyst relations to ensure the social media strategy aligns with business priorities.
  • Use a range of copywriting techniques to make the message clear, concise and compelling - taking into account cultural sensitivities.
  • Be creative and proactive in identifying and positioning stories with innovative angles to maximise impact on social media channels.
  • Work with agency partners and help manage budgets to support content creation, profiling and campaigns.
  • Be responsible for the quality of external communications outcomes and demonstrate the value and results for BT.
  • Safeguard sensitive customer information at all times, so that customers perceive BT to be a trustworthy organisation.
The skills you'll need
  • You'll have experience in corporate or B2B external communications, including corporate social media and digital communications.
  • A creative way of thinking - driven by outcomes rather than tactics.
  • A demonstrable understanding of the traditional and social media mix.
  • Experience creating communications plans for earned media campaigns (including national, broadcast and specialist media).
  • Experience creating profiling plans for senior business leaders.
  • A keen sense of how an earned media presence should be maintained.
  • Sound knowledge of corporate social media tools and how to engage with digital opinion leaders (e.g. business influencers).
  • An energetic, creative and collaborative way of working.
  • Preferably, experience navigating a complex matrix environment that includes coordination with many differing stakeholders and audiences.
  • A keen sense of what makes a good story and the ability to use storytelling to drive engagement among BT's audiences.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of key issues, trends and drivers in traditional executive profiling and social media.
  • Preferably, a good understanding on how to brief and manage agencies to deliver external communications and digital campaigns.
  • Excellent programme management skills with the capability to juggle a range of large projects and consistently deliver results.
