Seeing is believing. And that’s the only way you’ll really get to know about our sophisticated technologies and how we’re using them to fight crime in the capital. We don’t say much, for obvious reasons, but suffice to say that we’re leading advancements in emerging technologies to deliver bespoke electronic and IT solutions in specialist areas to make London safer.

The Technology, Research and Innovation (TRI) team keeps the Met at the cutting-edge of tech. Our work is highly innovative and no two projects are ever the same. The work we do is varied and so is the team we are looking for! The team is growing and we now have a number of roles and positions available for those with a background in one of many technology areas.

You will be part of the team that design and develop infrastructure technology solutions for unique policing challenges, both in the office and out in the field. Working closely with an enthusiastic and dedicated team of cross-discipline engineers, the team is also responsible for managing and maintaining a variety of systems to support the development activities within the department.

This staff role is an outstanding opportunity for a network engineer or system administrator who wants to further develop and enhance their range of technical skills within a team of other developers and engineers. We don’t expect you to have experience with all of the technologies we use, as different projects will demand different skillsets, but this role will give you the opportunity to use anything from Windows and Linux server administration skills, to being involved in the hands-on installation of physical and virtual networks and servers.

This is not a typical Infrastructure Engineer role. Your ability to adapt to a changing technological landscape will be key, as you will be in a position to solve unique problems within policing to bespoke and specialised technology solutions for use directly by operational teams. You will be using your skills to build secure solutions to meet customer requirements, whilst enhancing the capability of the team using the department’s development process and methodology.

What you will be doing

  • Using your technical experience to design, develop, and support new IT systems, as well as using your expertise to provide hands-on assistance to the team to enable them to deliver professionally engineered solutions.
  • Working with customers and stakeholders to ascertain their requirements, as well as alongside other members of the team to solve problems and build solutions.
  • Evaluate new products and technology for operational use.

Alongside your technical skills, you may have the opportunity to lead or mentor staff in this innovative and enthusiastic team, and ensuring their skills are current, utilising our generous training budget. Because the work we do really is varied, at times you’ll be collaborating with other members of the team, whilst at others you’ll be trusted to work on your own. We give you the time and space to nurture your interests, and you’ll be surrounded by a warm and inclusive team who will share advice, knowledge, and your enthusiasm for technology.

Have other technology skills instead?

This role is one of several new positions within team, where we are also looking for people with anything from cloud and DevOps specialisms, to those with a broad range of skills and experiences that may consider themselves IT technology generalists. Even if you do not feel your skills and experience entirely match this role description, we want to still hear from you. We are really keen to meet people from a number of different IT and technology backgrounds, and you may be a far better fit than you realise, so please do apply even if you aren’t entirely sure, and let us know why you want to work with us!
