YHA Windermere are looking to recruit a Seasonal Duty Manager for 25 - 42.5 hours per week from March to November 2024.

YHA Windermere has panoramic views of Lake Windermere and the Coniston & Langdale fells. The hostel is based in Troutbeck, a short walk to the village and then 2 miles from Windermere and 3 miles from Ambleside, with good transport links from the bus stop at the bottom of the lane. There are extensive grounds and woodland to explore, with great access to the fells in Troutbeck. Being slightly set back from the town means that the site is often relaxing and peaceful during the day time, when the crowds are elsewhere.  

The hostel is medium sized and has glamping and camping options alongside the internal rooms, our tipis, bell tents, pods and airstream are very popular, especially with families. The staff accommodation is split in two, one cottage on site in the woods, a few hundred metres from the hostel, and another property down by the lakeside.

The Role: Supporting Excellence in Hostel Operations

As a Seasonal Duty Manager, you play a vital role in supporting the management of an operational budget and the delivery of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). You'll also engage in a wide range of customer-facing duties across the hostel, delivering an outstanding service to all guests and visitors, ensuring they have a remarkable YHA experience.

Your Responsibilities

• Team Support: Directing and supporting the team working in all areas of the hostel, fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
• Leveraging Technology: Utilising our systems for efficient guest check-ins, check-outs and to manage various processes at the hostel.
• Cleanliness and Comfort: Carrying out cleaning and housekeeping duties, maintaining a clean and comfortable atmosphere for our guests.
• Culinary Delights: Assisting in the kitchen and serving food and drinks with warmth and hospitality, enhancing the dining experience, while engaging in authentic, inclusive conversations. Suggesting enjoying dinner with us or offering a beverage or dessert as you assist with table service, ensuring a diverse and welcoming experience for all guests.
• Deputy Management: Deputizing for the Hostel/Deputy Manager, managing the daily hostel operation in their absence.

What Skills and Experience We Value

Our Seasonal Duty Manager role requires flexibility to cover different shifts and tasks. While it's an advantage, it's not essential for our duty managers to have prior face-to-face customer service experience. However, experience in hospitality or customer service, particularly in managing and delivering a quality service, would be advantageous.

Desirable qualifications include Food Safety Level 2 and APLH Level 2, but these are not essential. Essential requirements include experience in managing varying pressures, including significant peaks in workload demands, and team management.

We value lived experiences just as much as previous skills and knowledge. We offer a robust induction, ongoing training, and further development. Some of our roles may have specific skills requirements, but we encourage team members from diverse backgrounds to apply.

Good communication skills and basic IT proficiency are advantageous, and excellent time management is essential in our dynamic environment.
