Introduction to role:

Join AstraZeneca UK as our Sustainability Lead, a role that is not only crucial to our reputation in environmental sustainability but also pivotal in driving our Zero Carbon strategy. This position offers the unique opportunity to shape and influence the UK’s environmental sustainability landscape and champion AstraZeneca UK’s contributions to reaching net zero targets across the four nations.

Accountabilities:

As the Sustainability Lead, you will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies that build, maintain and protect the company’s reputation in environmental sustainability. You will work cross-functionally to ready colleagues across the NHS-facing business to articulate the company’s achievements and the environmental sustainability profile of AstraZeneca’s brands. In addition, you will support AstraZeneca’s UK compliance with medicines supplier requirements and develop plans for AstraZeneca UK’s community engagement within the Knowledge Quarter.

  • Drive the strategic delivery of AstraZeneca UK’s Zero Carbon strategy

  • Develop and build an effective thought leadership platform for AstraZeneca UK in line with the company’s zero carbon strategy

  • Develop & deliver brand and enterprise wide strategies, materials, campaigns and events that promote and project AstraZeneca’s zero carbon strategy and reputation in environmental sustainability to external partners

  • Develop & deliver brand and enterprise wide strategies, materials and training events that ready colleagues across the NHS-facing business to articulate the company’s achievements and the environmental sustainability profile of AstraZeneca’s brands

  • Work closely with all functions (including Commercial, Regulatory, Compliance, Legal, Medical Affairs, Digital, Market Access) to ensure a coordinated and compliant approach to employee engagement and external partner engagement

  • Develop and advance AstraZeneca’s policy asks and lead delivery of our advocacy efforts to inform the development and implementation of government and NHS strategies relating to environmental sustainability

  • Develop & manage a central process to enable AstraZeneca UK to align with environmental sustainability requirements for medicines suppliers

  • Develop and deliver plans for impactful community engagement around our 2PS location

  • Contribute to the evolution and delivery of an integrated AstraZeneca UK sustainability strategy, including ensuring strong employee engagement

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • Significant experience working in the healthcare/pharma industry/relevant consultancies

  • Significant understanding of environmental sustainability matters in health and life sciences

  • Significant understanding of Government Affairs and UK Government strategic approach to Life Sciences

  • Proven ability of influencing colleagues and senior leaders across organisations

  • Proven ability of influencing external and government stakeholders

  • “Self-starter” with evidence of capability for matrix and cross-functional working

  • Can effectively delegate and manage 3rd parties to deliver outputs

  • Ability to work under pressure and prioritise accordingly

Desirable Skills/Experience:

  • Top-tier experience and public relations background, with demonstrated results within a leading company, agency, government or NGO

  • Relevant vocational qualifications or equivalent experience

  • Interest in UK political landscape and experience of working with/engaging politicians

  • UK experience

  • Experience with communication of regulatory and policy issues, and ability to translate them into clear and concise messaging

  • Understanding of ABPI code
